Jan 14th MLK day - the Dream

Postby Ross » Wed Dec 07, 2011 10:47 am

I told Black Horse I would get this posted. On the 14th is MLK day - remembering the dream. There will be a fundraiser held at the WOWHall and they are requesting Actions to participate in the planning. Speakers, actions, skits - you know lots of fun and motivational actions.
One possibility is the "Resurrecting the Dream" skit. The American Dream is crucified by the Big Banks, Pontius Pilot Obama can be there, the Roman Dogs of War (our fascist police) some symbolic crucifixion. Maybe not on a cross. ?? Our "house Person" can be put into a casket, And then, from out of the casket rises up the Resurrected Dream.
Anyway, I have fulfilled my promise to Black Horse and George, and look forward to working on this.
It begins at 6pm. on the 14th and will rock all night, Maybe a huge MLK March to end there. There will be others and maybe we can help consolidate them. thousands. Like Eugene has never seen. blow the doors off the WOWhall - wow

How about:

Occupy Your Rights -
- focus on the Constitutional right to assemble and protest Ross so nicely laid out,
- focus on the loss of of our constitutional right to habeus corpus under the NDAA.
- focus on the right to shelter under the 1948 Declaration of Human Rights [Article 25: Everyone has the right to a standard of living adequate for the health and well-being of himself and of his family, including food, clothing, housing and medical care and necessary social services, and the right to security in the event of unemployment, sickness, disability, widowhood, old age or other lack of livelihood in circumstances beyond his control.]

Jan. 14th
March/Rally
-March at 3:00. Rally at Wow Hall at 4:30ish before the fundraiser at 6:00? If the camping exemption is not extended this would be a within the 72 hours of any plans to dismantle the camp and we could use the large numbers on the street that day for sure. Let's give the "safety enforcers" something to ponder as they try to figure out how many will face arrest to protect the protest! Hell, we can invite Portland to join us if they don't have an event planned yet.

MLK had lots to say about free speech and the right to protest. Let's celebrate his legacy by Occupying our right to protest at W/J Park or wherever else we desire cuz the Constitution tells me so!

Perhaps even get a Day of Service project going from 10:00 - 2:00 with late lunch onsite, March leaving there and joining with Marchers at Wayne Morse Free Speech Plaza?

Thoughts? We'd need speakers for the rally, a flyer, press releases.

Hi this is Margot and George from Sonic Boom Productions, hosting the "We Have a Dream" event on Jan 14th. Thank you to those who have posted here already. We appreciate your help and creative ideas.

**We are thinking that ending a march at our event could cause it to draw negative attention from law enforcement, so this does not seem like a good idea. Maybe end the march at the square instead?**

As for Actions committee pulling together some kind of street theater performance, that would be great. The ideas put forth here are good so far. Please contact us directly with any questions or concerns.

This is going to be a major success and great way to help inform the locals about the purpose of Occupy Eugene! Let's really rock this thing! :D

There has been some confusion... just wanted to clarify that the We Have a Dream fundraising event will NOT be held at the WOW Hall. It is at a downtown location that will be announced on the day of the event. Please check the event page for details: http://www.facebook.com/events/264975070217729/
