CONRAD’S BUNK BED DIRECT ACTION VISITING OPPORTUNITY VILLAGE EUGENE (OVE) – SEPTEMBER 2, 2013

Conrad Barney finished his hunger strike of 60 days, protesting against the way our unhoused are treated.  His demand was for the city to stop criminalizing sleep, but after nearly two months with juice and vitamins only, they gave him no response.  The toll it took on his body was evident, so he had to start eating again.  After that he tried to educate the public with other direct actions with his Bunk Bed action being one of the most creative.  He built the bunk bed and painted with handprints and the words “where do you sleep?”.  He walked with the bunk bed on wheels from Roosevelt Ave., visiting OVE, and then continued to downtown, where SLEEPS (Safe Legally Entitled Emergency Places to Sleep) was occupying the Wayne Morse Free Speech Plaza.
