THE DIGNITY PROJECT
The Inside Out Project is a global participatory art project with the potential to change the world.
Inspired by JR’s large‐format street “pastings”, INSIDE OUT gives everyone the opportunity to share their portrait and make a statement for what they stand for. It is a global platform for people to share their untold stories and transform messages of personal identity into works of public art.
Each INSIDE OUT group action around the world is documented, archived and exhibited online. Nearly 200,000 people from more than 112 countries & territories have participated.
In Eugene we photographed and interviewed several people at each of four sites that are helping the unhoused with shelter. The group went to three Safe Spots managed by Community Supported Shelters and Opportunity Village Eugene. The interviews were used for a documentary called The Dignity Project: Hear Our Stories.
The posters of 20 photos were put on the back of the CSS truck and shown at the Friday Art Walk as well as parked in several places around town. Finally they were pasted up on the Salvation Army’s Wall on 7th Avenue. These pictures are meant to spark questions like “who are these people?” That is exactly what was asked at the art walk. The man said “they must be important”. The answer was “yes, they are our cities unhoused”.
They are important, just as each of us are. And they represent a lack of compassion that has grown in our society. When we are able to make it so everyone’s basic human rights are protected; then we will be the great nation we aspire to be.
