SLEEPS chose the Trudy Kaufman House for the Demonstration because it was a very large unused building that the city owned. The property was donated by Trudy Kaufman for a senior center; but had sat empty for some time after it closed. SLEEPS wanted to see unhoused women and children helped there. It is one of too many properties that sit vacant while unhoused people are forced to sleep without the ability to even legally shelter themselves.
At the Kaufman House Demonstration, many activists wore clown costumes and wrote pertinent messages in chalk on the sidewalks surrounding the house. Passers by could look at the giant house and see the protesters with signs all afternoon and until the next rain, they could read the signs in chalk, “Unhoused Children Need This House” or “Imagine Children Thriving Here”.
