In the Summer of 2013, the authorities decided to evict the unhoused living in Eugene’s wetlands. It had been a location where people could sleep without an issue from the police for some time but were now being told to leave with nowhere to go. A SLEEPS protester named James Chastain decided he would put his tent under the Ferry Street Bridge and begin to protest again. Several others joined him there and that was the beginning of two more years of solid protesting by Eugene’s unhoused–demanding the right to sleep. James was ticketed under the bridge and then moved to the Free Speech Plaza in late August.
