Lane County closed the Wayne Morse Free Speech Plaza and evicted SLEEPS for the second time on September 4, 2013. The county accused the SLEEPS camp of creating a health hazard and put up barricades, closing the plaza. With media to document the condition of the protest camp throughout the time SLEEPS occupied it, the truth was evident by just looking. So on September 7, 2013 the public saw the barricades with “no trespassing” signs posted but did not let it prevent them from entering their traditional space to gather on Saturdays. They tore down the barricades and spent approximately 4 hours there, with police knowledge but no attempt to remove anyone. After most others had left, Hedin Manus Brugh sat inside the plaza as part of the SLEEPS protest. He was choosing to use Eugene’s traditional space for free speech for what it was meant to for when Eugene police arrested him for trespassing. His trial is still pending.
