Police Say They Will Make No Arrests Tonight, Come Celebrate the Solstice With Us!

Lieutenant Kamkar has promised that he and his team will make no arrests tonight. So everyone come celebrate the solstice and farewell to camp party.

Earlier in the day Occupy Eugene did their first protest against the foreclosure crisis with their new BankBusters committee. The protest ended at the occupation site with a candle light vigil. For the past couple of days Occupy Eugene has been slowly dismantling structures while Eugene police posted notices to leave.

We have several livestream feeds covering tonight’s actions.

Camp Update/Adopt an Occupier!

The city government and police department has closed down Washington-Jefferson park  and our camping Occupy community is asked to vacate today . We are continuing to work cooperatively with the police to functionally remove tents, break down structures, and foremost, keep our park clean during this displacement. Our goal is to continue to keep this a peaceful action, working with the police to deconstruct on our terms, and in turn making sure that personal belongings remain intact and in our possession, unlike many of the evicted Occupiers across the country.

Unfortunately, the social services that were promised to be on site to help with the transition as homeless folks left the park did not arrive until 3:30pm, and many people who needed these services had already left.

This is a great opportunity to show Eugene and the world how resilient and passionate our community is—because it is built on love. To demonstrate this love, we want to initiate the ‘Adopt an Occupier’ campaign. This call goes out to members and supporters of the movement with houses or spare living situations. Please, open up your spare rooms, extra sofas, driveways, backyards or even a corner of a room. Please take the time to come down to the site and get in contact with a houseless Occupier to take home for the holiday season. Or call the Occupy Eugene hotline at 541-525-0130.

Solidarity starts at home. Adopt an Occupier.

Tell Eugene City Council You Support OE

Many of us are saddened and angry with the Eugene City Council’s decision to shutdown our protest, in direct conflict with our constitutional rights as Oregon citizens to assemble peaceably and protest.

Oregon Constitution

Section 1. Natural rights inherent in people. We declare that all men, when they form a social compact are equal in right: that all power is inherent in the people, and all free governments are founded on their authority, and instituted for their peace, safety, and happiness; and they have at all times a right to alter, reform, or abolish the government in such manner as they may think proper.

Section 26. Assemblages of people; instruction of representatives; application to legislature. No law shall be passed restraining any of the inhabitants of the State from assembling together in a peaceable manner to consult for their common good; nor from instructing their Representatives; nor from applying to the Legislature for redress of grievances [sic].

Now is a great time to contact Eugene City Hall and politely let your voice be heard.

12. 21 Non-Violent Resistance Training

On Wednesday, December 21, a passive non-violent resistance training will take place at the building located at 7th and Polk (the old AAA Appliance warehouse) at 3pm.

This training is highly recommended for those interested in engaging in civil disobedience when the occupy site is closed.

General Assemblies Every Day 7pm on Site

The General Assembly consensed on Tuesday Dec. 20th to hold General Assemblies every day at 7:00pm on site as long as we are occupying Washington Jefferson Park.

Occupy Eugene Responds to Eviction by City Council

Occupy Eugene is saddened by the City Council’s decision to evict protestors from Washington-Jefferson Park only 5 days before Christmas. The emergency meeting and decision to evict represents a clear betrayal of the collaborative relationship established between OE and the City.

This decision will serve as further motivation to protesters here in Eugene and around the country to continue to struggle against unjust laws and regulations that propagate social and economic injustice.

Occupy Eugene is grateful that some attempt was made to accommodate the immediate need for a safe place for homeless folks currently living at Washington Jefferson park by expanding car camping. However, this limited action will have little long-term impact on the problem of homelessness in Eugene and does nothing to replace the ability of the community to come together to solve its own problems.

Over the course of the occupation in Washington Jefferson Park, the citizens of Eugene, homeless and not, have created a community to address immediate problems and root causes of homelessness.

For the first time, many of Eugene’s homeless population have had a consistent safe place to sleep, three meals a day, medical care, job skills training, and a community to engage with based around mutual respect and equality. We invite the City of Eugene to take up a similar strategy in their attempts to address homelessness.

As was reiterated in the City Council meeting by Mayor Kitty Piercy, we hope that the eviction will happen peacefully without any force or violence. The official Occupy Eugene response to an eviction by the City of Eugene will be nonviolent.

The Occupation will continue with or without camp.

Press Release: OE Medics Help Save Another Life

OE medics help to save another life at W/J Park despite generator noise hampering efforts;
25 OE organizers arrive within minutes to help keep site calm for Eugene Police and Medics
On December 19th at approximately midnight a brief altercation occurred at the Occupy Eugene site. An extremely drunk individual with a heart condition came onto the OE site and started a fight with an OE occupant. Peacekeeper calls for de-escalation assistance went unheard because of the noise made by the four generators which now surround the site since high-powered security light towers were installed last Friday. Apparently Eugene Police were on site; the unconscious and injured instigator required CPR which the OE medic administered as EPD arrived on the scene. The man is in stable condition.

This is the 5th time that OE first responders have helped to save a life.

More than two dozen Occupy organizers and supporters arrived within minutes of notification. After establishing facts regarding the situation, they coordinated a peaceful vigil at the crime scene. Members of OE involved in the incident were given full community support. OE police liaisons provided relevant information to EPD officers. Police Chief Kerns, Lieutenant Kamkar, and City Councilor Ortiz were also on site. Lieutenant Kamkar did not expect any arrests as of 1:30am.

This press release has been approved by the General Assembly of Occupy Eugene.
